15 Posts From the World Cancer Leaders Summit 2023 Not To Miss!

The World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2023 took place on 16th and 17th of October in Long Beach, California, United States. The theme of the WCLS 2023 was “Cancer control in a changing world“.  Our team at OncoDaily features 15 posts from WCLC 2023.

1. Ophira Ginsburg (Canada)

Terrific opening session of WCLS2023 with addresses from the International Agency for Research on Cancer Director, Elisabete Weiderpass, Director General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General, Rafael Grossi.

Important session: cancer control in crisis situations. Learnings from Sudan, Ukraine and Turkey:

– Collecting data is critical
– Crisis preparedness should be featured in National Cancer Control Plans
– The role of the regional and international response
– Crises within crises

Peace for health and health for peace.

4. Tezer Kutluk (Turkey)

I have two suggestions for the global oncology community:
  • Every NCCP must have a section as “cancer control in crisis situation”.
  • Collecting data & research during crisis situation is not a luxury, it is “a must to do” for actions against crisis.

5. Union for International Cancer Control (UICC)

The World Cancer Leaders’ Summit has been an incredible journey. The summit brought together global decision-makers, allowing them to interact, share their invaluable experiences and expertise, and collaborate on shaping the path towards a future where cancer is no longer a life-threatening disease for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who made this summit a success! Until next time, let’s continue working tirelessly towards our shared goal. Together, we can make a difference!

6. Andreas Charalambous (Cyrpus)

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

This is so true when it comes to Cancer Control in Crises Situations. Today we explored the experiences of crisis in Sudan, Syria and Ukraine through the eyes of people who were directly involved namely Tezer Kutluk, Anna Uzlova and Nazik Hammad.

Crises are complex and unique to the region they occur and for the future management of such impactful events on cancer control we need the collective knowledge gained over the years. There is no “silver bullet” but working together and learning from each other can certainly tip the odds to better crisis management that will safeguard the health and well-being of people.

Exciting updates from the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2023 in Long Beach, CA!  Over 350 leaders from 72 countries are coming together to address critical issues in cancer care.

An inspiring opening address: Jeff Dunn, President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), welcomed participants to the Summit and reminded them of the importance of collaboration in addressing cancer control and closing the care gap.

Today began with discussions on breast cancer care in Latin America and early detection innovations, followed by an inspiring speech by UICC President Jeff Dunn. The summit’s agenda covers diverse topics, including climate change’s impact on cancer care, addressing inequities, childhood cancer, and the role of AI and mRNA vaccines in cancer diagnosis.

A special highlight is the launch of the Latin American Code Against Cancer, a collaboration between IARC and Pan American Health Organization, and the UICC’s Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Awards presentation during the closing ceremony. Stay tuned for more updates on this pivotal event!
