New Article Alert in the European Journal of Cancer.

A new study looks at the challenges faced by adolescents (ages 15-19) with cancer in Italy, especially their participation in national clinical trials (AIEOP: Associazione Italiana Ematologia Oncologia Pediatrica).

Here are the main points:

Adolescents have not improved in survival as much as younger children and older adults, partly because they join fewer clinical trials.

Only 55% of registered adolescents took part in national trials, compared to 69% of younger children. The ratio of observed to expected cases for adolescents was very low at 0.10, showing they are underrepresented.

Sarcomas had the highest participation rates among adolescents, showing the need for more targeted recruitment strategies.

The study highlights the need for better referral to pediatric oncology units and more efforts to involve adolescents in clinical trials for better treatment outcomes.

Addressing these issues is important for improving the health of adolescents with cancer.”
