IARC’s Isabelle Soerjomataram presents the tobacco free generation

“New video!

IARC’s Dr Isabelle Soerjomataram presents the tobacco free generation, one of the Tobacco Endgame Strategies, as a new IARC-led study shows that prohibiting the sale of tobacco to people born 2006-2010 could prevent 1.2 million Lung Cancer deaths by 2095.”

Have you heard about the endgame strategies? Do you know what the tobacco-free generation is? Today I will briefly talk about this and how these policies can change the future burden of cancer. Lung cancer is the most common cancer and cause of cancer death globally.

And tobacco smoking is the key cause of lung cancer and many other cancer types.

The World Health Organization has published a policy package to control tobacco smoking under a framework which is called the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

As tobacco smoking continues to be common, there are additional policies that have been proposed to end tobacco smoking for good. And these are called the endgame strategies.

One of these policies is the tobacco-free generation, where tobacco sales is banned based on birth dates. For example, in parts of the US, for a person born in 2010 or later can no longer buy tobacco products. So in our new study, the first of its kind, we estimated the impact of such policies on lung cancer death.

And we found that banning tobacco sales to young generations could significantly reduce lung cancer mortality. To be precise, such policies could prevent 1.2 million lung cancer deaths or 40% of all lung cancer deaths predicted to happen. So why is this study so important? There are really today still too many people suffering and dying from cancer.

We need to strengthen national prevention policy to make a real impact. And our study at the International Agency for Research on Cancer showed how this can be done for a future where there are fewer people suffering and dying from cancer.
