Foluke Sarimiye about oncology mentee-mentor relationship
Foluke Sarimiye, Clinical Lecturer in Radiation/Clinical Oncology and a Psycho-Oncologist at the University of Ibadan, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Oncology Mentee-Mentor Relationship.
‘Mentorship is a two-way street, where both parties learn and grow’ – Sheryl Sandberg.
‘Mentors and Mentees are interdependent, each contributing to the other’s success’ – John Maxwell.
In the intricate, multifaceted and emotionally charged field of Oncology, mentorship plays a vital role in shaping the next generation of cancer care professionals.
My perspective is that a meaningful oncology mentee-mentor relationship is built on the following: trust and integrity, shared passion and clear goals, hard work and discipline, authentic leadership and professionalism, open communication and active listening, empathy and emotional intelligence, flexibility and adaptability, care and support system, feedback and evaluations, celebrating successes and overcoming challenges, and also gratitude and appreciation.
The oncology mentee-mentor relationship is a synergistic relationship that nurtures and fosters growth, resilience, wisdom, success and fulfillment.
By embracing these values and best practices, both mentee and mentor can cultivate and have a dynamic and productive relationship that will bring personal fulfillment, improve patient care and advance the field of Oncology.
It was pleasant and refreshing, seeing and catching up with my mentee, Dr. Micheal Adeyemi – Oncology Registrar, Royal Derby Hospital, U.K. He is doing great and greater exploits loading, keep soaring OncoDoc.”
