Bente Mikkelsen is the Director of Noncommunicable Diseases in the Division of UHC/Communicable and Noncommunicable Diseases at the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Previously, she served as Director of the Division of Noncommunicable Diseases and Promoting Health through the Life-course at the WHO Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen and led the Global Coordination Mechanism on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases (WHO GCM/NCD) from its inception in 2014.
She also served as CEO of the Southern and Eastern Norway Regional Health Authority. Dr. Mikkelsen, trained as a gynecologist and obstetrician, holds a Master’s degree in Health Administration and Management from the University of Oslo.
Her current work focuses on reducing premature deaths from NCDs to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), utilizing innovation, implementation research, health literacy, and new technologies across sectors.
In case of last news connected to Bente Mikkelsen, Catharina Boehme, Assistant Director General External Relations at World Health Organization, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Bente Mikkelsen is retiring. Today is her last day as a World Health Organization staff member.
She is a friend, but also a colleague that really made a difference for noncommunicable diseases — such as cancers, diabetes, lung or heart disease.
I am really confident that I will work with her again in her post-WHO life.
Thank you Bente for your friendship, your leadership and your contributions during your career for a healthier world.
And not least, for inspiring us last week at UNGA!”
