Tunji Alausa: High-Level meeting on Anti Microbial Resistance
Tunji Alausa, Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Federal Republic of Nigeria, shared a post on X:
“At UNGA79, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Ali Pate and myself took part in High-Level meeting on Anti Microbial Resistance, aimed at building stronger national, regional and international political commitment, comprehensively in a multi-sectoral manner. With Nigeria’s high morbidity rates associated with and attributed to AMR, in September, the FMOH & SW established an Antimicrobial Stewardship Taskforce to coordinate countrywide surveillance of AMR trends and research activities, and provide further public awareness and education on AMR.
We’ve also set up a National infection prevention and control programme called “Turning Nigeria Orange”, inline with the Global action plan for infection prevention and control, and are intensifying surveillance for multi-drug resistance Tuberculosis and governing the use and sale of antibiotics. AMR is a silent but deadly threat that has taken root globally.
It is therefore imperative that we widen the scope for research and development for new innovations, diagnostics, and treatment of diseases and infections to abate AMR. As the Ministers of health, we are deeply committed to building on past lessons and successes to combat AMR and provide better healthcare for all Nigerians. Nigeria welcomes the commitment under this political declaration on AMR and assure the global community of our readiness to fully implement the obligations of this declaration.”
