Wafik El-Deiry: A bit of history and recent developments at the Legorreta Cancer Center
Wafik El-Deiry shared a post on X:
“A bit of our history and recent developments at the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University.
There was an NCI-funded clinical cancer center in Rhode Island led by Dr. Paul Calabresi in the 1980’s. Dr. Calabresi, a giant in the field of oncology and past American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) President was Chair of Medicine at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University for two decades. Sadly he passed away from cancer in the early 1990’s.
I was recruited to the institution in 2018 and much has happened here over the last 6-7 years to build impactful programs, community outreach and clinical trials. Brown University approved a Cancer Center at Brown University by early 2020 and we were fortunate to receive a naming gift for the Legorreta Cancer Center in 2021.
The gift has allowed transformational growth to the present time and a trajectory towards a critically needed world-class cancer center in Rhode Island.
We have much work to do in the coming years as we further develop our cancer center at the highest national standards. Importantly we are working towards unique local and global impact to add value to the national effort to combat cancer.
The people of our state and region deserve no less as we drill into the high cancer causes in RI, make discoveries, conduct unique clinical trials for patients, and work back-and-forth with our communities to learn and address needs.
The work is very important, costly, will benefit from collaboration across disciplines and through key partnerships including with the State of RI. The impact will be realized in a healthier Rhode Island with vibrant biotechnology and healthcare ecosystems.”
