Christian Ntizimira: Rethinking cultural traditions to optimize palliative care

Christian Ntizimira, Founder and Executive Director of ACREOL in Rwanda, shared a post on X:

” ‘If you are not part of the table, you are probably part of the menu.’

Despite its critical role in supporting people with advanced cancer, palliative care doesn’t attract the same attention or investment as other areas.

At the UICC, WCC24, a session led by experts Christian Ntizimira, Eric Krakauer and Zhimeng Jia focused on rethinking cultural traditions to optimize palliative care.

We explored how integrating meaningful cultural practices can enhance patient support, especially for advanced cancer patients. This reflection emphasizes the urgency of ensuring palliative care is not forgotten, advocating for its inclusion at every level of cancer treatment conversations.

We can better serve patients by addressing cultural needs and making care more personalized and humane.

Thanks to our ACREOL volunteers Brandon Niyibizi and Louis Grignon for their support.”

Omar Abdihamid, Oncologist at Garissa Cancer Center, shared this post, adding:

“Cultural based cancer care remains one of my pet topics in cancer care especially in Sub-Sahara Africa. Read more here.”
