Sami Mansfield: Weight loss discussion for cancer survivors is a must-read
Sami (Papacek) Mansfield posted the following on LinkedIn:
“For my colleagues here who are especially focusing on the weight loss discussion in our cancer survivor population, this post is a MUST read.
There is not a single solution to this complex topic, and we must continue to dig deeper into this topic instead of looking for quick solutions, punting to other problems, allowing our patients to be challenged with more questions than answers while we continue to tell them how important having a ‘healthy BMI’ for their long-term survival is. Yet, it’s too easy to simply say exercise more and eat less without identifying appropriate, individual, and long-term solutions.
I would absolutely agree there is a role for the GLP-1 agonists just like there are roles for certain treatments in cancer. We are finally elevating the role of quality of life in clinical decision-making for treatment choices, shouldn’t this all be part of the equation.
I am thankful for my obesity medicine colleagues, without them I would also be lost, at least I have tools to shed a little bit of light on the topic!”
