Korede Akindele: These harsh realities stand in the way of survival for countless children
Korede Akindele, Head of Programs at The Dorcas Cancer Foundation, shared on LinkedIn:
“Welcome to September!
That time of the year when we find ourselves behind microphones, under lights, and on the road, traversing Nigerian states, holding crucial meetings, appealing to government bodies, and diverse stakeholders, all for one mission: Because That Child Must Live.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In Nigeria and many other parts of Africa, the battle against pediatric cancer is hindered by critical challenges:
- Late diagnoses
- Limited access to specialized care
- Insufficient training for healthcare professionals
- Overwhelming financial barriers
These harsh realities stand in the way of survival for countless children.
But alongside these challenges, there is hope. The Dorcas Cancer Foundation and many others across the continent are making significant strides. Through initiatives that promote early detection, provide access to medicine, offer specialized training, and raise awareness, we are reshaping the narrative of childhood cancer in Africa.
We remain determined to amplify awareness and education, break down barriers to care, and forge a brighter future for children battling cancer here in Nigeria and beyond.
September has arrived; let’s make it count.”
