Julie McCrossin: New research on prevention of osteoradionecrosis or bone death after radiation therapy to the jaw

Julie McCrossin shared a post on LinkedIn:

“New research on prevention of osteoradionecrosis or bone death after radiation therapy to the jaw.

CONCLUSION
This study reached consensus on the importance of pre and post oral health assessment and education for patients with head and neck cancer. This was also noted by the former patients and carers who took part in the study. This study highlights the need for a standardized oral health assessment tool and multidisciplinary care of patients. However, the diversity among patients with HNC related to clinical factors, treatment modalities, behavioral factors and access to care have significant impacts on the prevention of ORN.

This study concludes that continuous collaboration by all members of the head and neck multidisciplinary team is required to minimize ORN incidence. There is an opportunity for the interprofessional education of all future members of head and neck multidisciplinary teams to learn more about the contribution of each other’s specialty to the minimization of this debilitating side effect.”

Here is a 4 minute interview with Dentist Dr Nectarios Andrews, who works with cancer teams in Sydney, explaining the condition.
