Honoring Gina Lee, Assistant Professor at UCI

Gina Lee, PhD, an Assistant Professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI), and a member of the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, passed away on June 23, 2024, at the age of 39.

Born in South Korea, she earned a bachelor’s degree from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and a doctorate from Seoul National University. She completed her postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School and the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM) of Cornell University.

Lee began her academic career at WCM as an instructor in pharmacology before joining UCI in 2020. Her research focused on cancer signaling and metabolism, with a specific emphasis on the genetic kidney tumor syndrome known as tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC).

On her passing American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“We are saddened by the loss of Gina Lee, PhD, who died June 23 at the age of 39.

An AACR member since 2009, Dr. Lee was an assistant professor of microbiology and molecular genetics at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and a member of the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. We offer heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues.”
