Laura Vater: Every doctor who leaves due to burnout, the cost to an organization is $500,000 to $1 million
Laura Vater, GI oncologist at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on X:
“Prioritizing the wellbeing of doctors is the ethical thing to do. It also protects patient safety and accessibility to care. We now know it’s also the financially savvy thing to do. For every doctor who leaves due to burnout, the cost to an organization is $500,000 to $1 million.”

Dr. Laura B. Vater is a gastrointestinal oncologist at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, specializing in colorectal, pancreatic, gastric, liver, and bile duct cancers.
She developed the SMILE Scale in 2017, a tool used globally to help patients and clinicians prioritize health. Her research interests include narrative medicine to enhance clinician empathy and support caregivers in their work.
