Isabel Mestres: Thanks you Ophira Ginsburg for your leadership and the all the Lancet Commision team for setting the stage for action! Now lets make it happen.

Ophira Ginsburg, Senior Advisor for Clinical Research at the U.S. National Cancer Institute, recently shared a post by Isabel Mestres on LinkedIn, adding:

“Thank you Isabel Mestres and City Cancer Challenge!

Very excited to work with you to take this agenda forward.
Gender equality in cancer prevention, care, and caregiving Will help everyone regardless of gender!”

Quoting Isabel Mestres’s post:

“2.3 million women who die prematurely from cancer every year, ALL OF THEM, could be averted through primary prevention, early detection strategies, and access to optimal cancer care. Despite the evidence, funding is still lacking for implementation science in resource-constrained settings.

Yesterday, I was honored to attend T the Lancet Commission on Women, Power, and Cancer launch event. It was an enriching experience that highlighted from a groundbreaking feminist perspective the unjust power imbalances women face in cancer care and its intersecting facets, particularly in decision-making, knowledge generation, and economics. You can read more about it at this link.

At City Cancer Challenge, we welcome the report’s release and its recommendations. We have always been committed to collaborating with stakeholders to create accessible and responsive health systems that provide quality cancer care for all women and girls. One of our commitments has been on empowering women by offering them equitable opportunities, which is central to our work. For example, the Leadership Programme for Women in Oncology in partnerships with American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) has already provided 10 women working in our cities with the skills they need to overcome challenges and barriers faced by women leaders in oncology. However, we need to go further.

We are now developing C/Can’s first Gender Equity Strategy, a significant milestone towards closing the gender gap in leadership, training, and representation within the all-encompassing cancer care workforce in low- and middle-income countries, from first-line nurses to oncologists and researchers. We are excited to be part of a bigger movement to make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by cancer while contributing to the achievement of SDG 3, 5, 8, 10, and 17.

Thank you Ophira Ginsburg for your leadership and the all the Lancet Commission team for setting the stage for action! Now let’s make it happen.”
