Amy C. Moore: Missing the big things: Delayed lung cancer and cachexia

Amy C. Moore, VP, Global Engagement and Research Partnerships at LUNGevity Foundation, shared on X:

Buried in this story of one woman’s delayed lung cancer treatment is that she was down 15 lb. Cancer cachexia is weight loss >5% without trying. If we are missing the big things (cancer), you know we are missing more.

Our Cancer Grand Challenges Team CANCAN seeks to increase education and awareness of cachexia as it negatively impacts patients’ QOL and ability to tolerate cancer Treatment, diminishing prognosis. Up to half of patients with lung cancer may experience cachexia but most have never heard of it..

And if HCPs dismiss the cough as ‘allergies,’ they may say ‘you needed to lose a few pounds anyway.’ Or patients may think they somehow managed to shed those pesky pounds, not knowing a battle is raging inside them between their tumor’s need for nutrients and their own body’s..

Team CANCAN’s ultimate goal is to define the underlying mechanisms that cause cancer cachexia and define patient subpopulations that may benefit from tailored interventions.
