Annie Edwards: We were the first in Europe to develop chemotherapy drugs
Annie Edwards, Corporate Partnerships Manager at The Institute of Cancer Research, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Did you know..?
In the early 20th Century, scientists at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) identified cancer-causing chemicals in cigarette smoke, including the first pure carcinogen ever to be isolated.
We were the first in Europe to develop chemotherapy drugs, some of which are still in use today many decades later.
In the 50s and 60s, ICR scientists provided the first conclusive evidence that the basic cause of cancer is damage to DNA, marking a turning point in the field of cancer research.”
