Wafik S. El-Deiry: Appreciated the historic perspective provided by Dr. Gordon Freeman…
Wafik S. El-Deiry, Director of the Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University, shared on LinkedIn:
“Appreciated the historic perspective provided by Dr. Gordon Freeman at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and his contributions including discovery of PD-L1 & PD-L2, showing they bind PD-1 and that blockade of PD-1 interaction with PD-L1 enhances immune responses.
Some of his quotes ‘the fight between cancer and the immune system is years long,’ and ‘tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes behave like exhausted T-cells and are awakened by immune checkpoint blockade.’
He also spoke about more recent work with a cool luciferase reconstitution assay when PD-L1 and B7-1 associate, consequences of PD-1 blockade on T-regs and innovative immunotherapy strategies that may avoid T-reg PD-1 blockade, impact of microbiome on PD-L2, and PD-L1/L2 gene amplification in cancer such as Hodgkin’s disease.”
