“Earlier this week, my son Xander and I summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro, reaching the Uhuru (‘Freedom’) Peak at sunrise.
Reaching the top of the world’s highest freestanding mountain, and the highest point on the continent of Africa, we were proud to display the City of Hope’s Center for Cancer 20th celebration and Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) flag. We also left a memorial stone to Art Hurria, with the African Proverb that represents our field and this endeavor:
‘If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.’
We shared the hard, cold journey to the Roof of Africa with others from across the global community: UK, France, Brazil, Russia, Italy, and the US. And to be led by the competence, judgement, and enthusiasm of our guides from Tanzania. As the oldest member of the team, with my son at my side, it was an honor to share the quest and success with all.
