“In bladder cancer, what’s the difference between recurrence and progression?
Recurrence is a tumor growing back without the grade or stage getting worse. Progression is moving in a more serious direction, typically from non-muscle-invasive to muscle-invasive. Recurrence is far more likely: even in low-risk disease it runs 10% to 35% over 5 years.
The two call for completely different handling: recurrence is managed within the existing framework, while progression means switching to a different volume to read (volume two).
So when you hear,

the first thing to ask is:
compared with last time, have the grade and stage changed?
