“A computer model developed by Weill Cornell Medicine scientists shows promise in helping to create protein-destroying therapies that could be used in cancer treatment.
Most drugs use a small molecule to neutralize disease-causing proteins, but protein-degrader therapies strive to completely destroy the proteins.
This approach may be especially valuable for cancers driven by mutated or overproduced proteins, where reducing or removing the protein could be more effective than simply turning it off.
A team led by Dr. Olivier Elemento and Dr. Wei Du created a mathematical framework that enables scientists to predict which proteins are the best candidates for degradation and identify the most efficient path for designing effective degraders.
‘This is one step toward our goal, which is not to design a drug that is supposed to work for a million patients or a thousand patients, but to design one that is customized to one unique patient,‘ said Dr. Elemento.
