Wafik S. El-Deiry, Director of Legorreta Cancer Center at Brown University and Chair of the WIN Consortium in Cancer Personalized Medicine, shared a post on X:
“This is the message I sent to my colleagues at the Legorreta Cancer Center this morning:
Dear Colleagues,
I am reaching out at this time to make sure you are safe and well.
The words sad, tragic, senseless, and insane come to mind as far as the events on Saturday on our campus. Several of our student lab members working on cancer research (and many others) were part of the lockdown and are safe while tragically Brown students were injured or lost their lives.
As an academic community we are in the words of Provost Doyle focusing ‘our efforts on providing care and support to the members of our community as we grapple with the sorrow, fear and anxiety that is impacting all of us right now.’ ‘University leaders are committed to providing care and mobilizing resources to assist our community members through this difficult time.’
We are also anxious given the news from last night that the person responsible for the violence and murder on our campus is still at large.
It is a difficult time here with the holidays and we hope and pray for healing that will take time.
Best wishes to all of you at this time.”
