Wafaa M Rashed: Africa for Africans – Evidence-Based Voices Leading the Way
Wafaa M Rashed, Chair and founder of PAPERI at Pan- African PGS Education and Research Initiative, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Africa for Africans – Evidence-Based Voices Leading the Way
We are proud to spotlight Dr. John Omondi Muoma, Associate Professor from Kenya and participant in the 10th Cohort of the Policy Advocacy in Genetics and Genomics course, for his thought-provoking blog on “GMO labeling”.
In his reflection, Dr. Muoma applies the principles learned during our Policy Advocacy Course to a pressing and often controversial topic in African agriculture and food systems: “Should labeling of GMO products be mandatory or voluntary?”
His blog explores:
- Lessons from the EU and US approaches to GMO labeling
- The balance between transparency, consumer choice, and economic impact
- The role of public education, regulation, and advocacy in shaping informed policies
- The need for clear, evidence-based voices in Africa to address debates already resolved in other parts of the world through strong frameworks and standards.
This is exactly the kind of leadership Africa needs — thoughtful, informed, and driven by facts rather than fear. Whether we agree with every stance or not, it is voices like Dr. Muoma’s that will help shape policies that serve our people and our future.
