“An important and often overlooked question in oncology clinical research: does access to clinical trial participation align with the burden of cancer across different regions?
Spain is one of Europe’s leading countries in oncology clinical research, yet our analysis reveals a marked geographical concentration of clinical trial activity and patient participation. The findings suggest that access to therapeutic innovation may be influenced more by historical research infrastructure and trial hubs than by epidemiological need.
This work highlights the importance of routinely monitoring research equity and strengthening collaborative networks to ensure that a patient’s place of residence does not determine their opportunities to participate in clinical research.
