”Day 1 of the ESMO Course in Medical Oncology for Medical Students in Valencia
The day began with an inspiring welcome from Dr. Andres Cervantes, followed by a thoughfull talk from Dr. Rodrigo Sanchez Bayona on why oncology is such a meaningful specialty.
We then moved into the fundamentals of cancer care, where Dr. Andres Cervantes walked us through the practical approach to diagnosing, staging, and treating patients with cancer. Dr. Jonathan Lim gave an excellent overview of how systemic treatment has evolved from chemotherapy to targeted therapies and immunotherapy.
One of the highlights of the day was the interactive clinical trials workshop. It was a great reminder that understanding the evidence behind treatments is just as important as knowing the treatments themselves.
The afternoon was dedicated to breast cancer. Dr. Ana Bosch discussed the management of early breast cancer and guided us through clinical cases, while Dr. Matteo Lambertini covered advanced breast cancer and shared practical insights from real-world clinical practice. We finished the day with an interactive workshop where we applied what we had learned to clinical scenarios.
Beyond the lectures, one of the best parts of today was meeting medical students from across Europe. It’s exciting to be surrounded by people who share the same interest in oncology and to exchange ideas and experiences.
Looking forward to the sessions ahead!”
