Ulrika Årehed Kågström: To Walk in the Shoes of the Patient – A Lasting Message From Momentum 2026

Ulrika Årehed Kågström, President of Union for International Cancer Control and Board Member of Nordic Cancer Union, shared on LinkedIn:

“What an incredible experience Momentum 2026 has been!

‘To walk in the shoes of the patient.’

Of all the inspiring ideas and perspectives shared during these three days, this is one message that will stay with me.

Because behind every scientific breakthrough, every policy decision and every discussion about the future of cancer research and care, there are people. People whose lives depend on our ability to turn progress into real change.

And that is what Momentum is all about.

I leave these three days feeling inspired, grateful and more determined than ever.

Our ambition was never to create just another conference. We wanted to bring together people with the knowledge, influence and determination to challenge established ways of working and accelerate progress for patients.

And seeing leaders and experts from across Europe, representing research, healthcare, policy, industry and patient organisations, come together with such openness, energy and a genuine willingness to find new ways forward has been truly inspiring.

One thing has become even clearer to me. Europe does not lack scientific excellence, expertise or innovation. We have extraordinary strengths. But we need to become much better at connecting them and turning scientific breakthroughs into real benefits for patients, faster and more equitably.

That requires breaking down barriers between sectors and countries, challenging established ways of working and, above all, turning ambition into action. Because patients cannot afford to wait.

At Cancerfonden, we are committed to building on the insights and recommendations from Momentum and helping turn this collective energy into meaningful progress for patients across Europe.

I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together and deeply grateful to our partners, speakers and everyone who has contributed their knowledge, commitment and passion to making Momentum possible.

But perhaps what inspires me most is not what we have accomplished over these three days. It is the potential of what we can achieve next.Momentum 2026 may be over, but the momentum we have created must continue.

Now comes the most important part. Turning our shared ambition into real action and making sure that scientific progress reaches the people who need it most.

Because ultimately, that is how we make a difference. Together.”
