Gender Norms and Barriers Driving Cancer Deaths in West Africa – UICC

Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Gender norms and systemic barriers are fuelling cancer-related deaths among women in West Africa, despite the availability of preventive tools:

  •  Breast and cervical cancers remain treatable, but too many women face late diagnoses and limited care options.
  •  Supportive care services are largely absent, and stigma continues to delay care-seeking.
  •  Engaging women in policy design and men as advocates is key to shifting the paradigm.

UICC Young Leader, Dr Samiratou Ouedraogo of Burkina Faso, speaks about the economic hardship, stigma, social norms, and other barriers that women face and that delay care, stressing the need for a human rights–based approach to ensure access to supportive services.

A must-read for anyone working on gender and health equity.
