Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, shared a post on X:
“I commend Montenegro and the Minister of Finance, Novica Vukovic, on taking a bold step to protect public health by increasing taxes on tobacco products by 61.4% – a proven measure to reduce consumption and prevent diseases associated with these harmful products.
I urge more governments to implement health taxes not just on tobacco products, but also alcohol and sugary products as part of a comprehensive approach to improving health and strengthening financing for health systems.
