Team Survivor Northwest Marks 30 Years of Fitness and Support for Women Cancer Survivors

In 1995, a group of women cancer survivors in Seattle came together to train for a triathlon – with oncologist Dr. Julie Gralow as their team physician. Inspired by their resilience and the profound physical and emotional benefits of movement, Dr. Gralow joined forces with fitness expert Lisa Talbott to found Team Survivor Northwest.

Over the past 30 years, research has only strengthened the evidence that exercise benefits cancer survivors. Yet our mission – and our community – remain the same:

– Free, year-round fitness programs for women impacted by cancer
– Support that empowers survivors to live strong, connected, and confident lives

It’s incredible to look back at some of the PNW landmarks that have been part of our journey – Fred Hutch, Starbucks, Summit at Snoqualmie, University of Washington’s Husky Stadium and our mighty peaks: Mt. St Helens, Mt Rainier and Mt Adams.

Along the way, we’ve taken part in the Danskin Triathlon, American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Seattle Marathon Association events, Susan G Koman Foundation’s Race for the Cure, and countless other community gatherings – all with one goal: to help more women with cancer to thrive.”

Such an amazing (and fun) journey. So proud of Team Survivor Northwest and every single member who accepted the challenge of incorporating fitness into their life after a cancer diagnosis.
