“During National Postdoc Appreciation Week, we celebrate the contributions of postdoctoral researchers and highlight how St. Jude is investing in postdocs through resources, mentorship and career development opportunities.
Since its founding in 1998, the St. Jude Postdoctoral Association has fostered an environment that supports professional growth through educational programs, seminars and research training. The Postdoctoral Leadership Council (PDLC) serves as the representative body for the Association, advocating for the interests of postdocs. The Council offers a setting for developing essential skills and engaging with St. Jude administration.
‘When I joined St. Jude, I reached out to my peers and they had always been very helpful. That made me feel welcome and helped me network more. That was my goal in taking up this role. I can give the same sense of belonging to other postdocs through initiatives like career development.’ – Said Saikat Nandy, PhD, who serves as career development co-vice chair of the PDLC.
‘This is my very first position in the United States and I was looking for a community. The PDLC was a perfect opportunity to network with other postdocs and scientific professionals.’ Added co-vice chair Gintvile Valinciute, PhD.
Nandy and Valinciute have demonstrated a commitment to building community and supporting their peers through organizing events such as the St. Jude Career Symposium and academic career panels. These initiatives provide opportunities for networking, learning about career paths and discussing entry into academic fields beyond the laboratory.
