Growth Often Happens When Professionals Move Beyond What Feels Comfortable – St. Jude

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Transformative leadership rarely develops in moments of certainty. More often, it grows when professionals are willing to step outside their expertise, learn new skills and trust themselves through the discomfort of change.

After spending a decade in a neonatal intensive care unit and advancing into a supervisor role, Sarah Currie, RN, took on an entirely new challenge as a solid organ procurement coordinator. The transition left her questioning her confidence and capabilities as she adapted to an unfamiliar field.

‘I learned not to doubt myself or my capacity to learn,’ Currie said.

The experience ultimately reshaped the way she leads at St. Jude. Today, as chief nursing executive, Currie encourages nurses to embrace opportunities that stretch their skills, recognizing that growth often happens when professionals move beyond what feels comfortable. Her approach helps nurses develop confidence, strengthen decision-making abilities and pursue new areas of specialization.

‘When you are feeling challenged, it is probably when you are growing the most,’ Currie said.

At St. Jude, nurses build specialized clinical expertise while working in an environment that uniquely integrates patient care and research. By investing in professional growth, mentorship and lifelong learning, clinical leaders help prepare nurses to contribute across care and research while advancing outcomes for children with catastrophic diseases.”
