“New in JGO
Is picking up geriatric oncology knowledge on the job enough to prepare oncology trainees for the patients they’ll see most?
This mixed-methods study surveyed and interviewed Canadian medical oncology trainees and recent graduates about their geriatric oncology training. Most reported some exposure, but teaching was largely opportunistic and informal rather than built into the formal curriculum. Trainees generally felt comfortable caring for older adults, largely because of how many they see in practice, though some acknowledged possible blind spots. The authors argue opportunistic learning should complement structured teaching, not substitute for it.
