Shouptik Basu: Peritoneal Surface Oncology Services Established at Saroj Gupta in Kolkata

Shouptik Basu, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute, recently shared insights into the transformative Peritoneal Surface Oncology services established at the institute in Kolkata.

Peritoneal Surface Oncology Services have been established at Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute, Thakurpukur, Kolkata, under the leadership of Dr. Shouptik Basu, marking a meaningful step forward in cancer care in Eastern India. The unit has been operational since the past year and it has benfitted many patients who were considered as incurable

With a legacy of over 50 years, the institute continues to contribute to oncological care and academic development in the region. It is currently the only teaching institute in Eastern India to have initiated a PIPAC (Pressurized Intraperitoneal Aerosolized Chemotherapy) program, enabling access to advanced treatment approaches while supporting the training of future surgical oncologists.

The institute also remains a teaching center with superspecialty residents in Surgical Oncology, where trainees are being exposed to evolving therapies in the management of peritoneal surface malignancies.

Dr. Basu has received specialized training in Peritoneal Surface Oncology and is certified by the International Society for the Study of Pleura and Peritoneum (ISSPP). The unit has also reported the performance of Eastern India’s first PITAC (Pressurized Intrathoracic Aerosolized Chemotherapy), reflecting ongoing efforts to explore newer therapeutic options.

In addition, the team has adopted an indigenously developed Indian PIPAC system, NANOSOL, along with the FDA-certified Capnopen device, further enhancing capabilities in intraperitoneal therapy delivery.

Efforts are underway to develop collaborative initiatives with ISSPP aimed at generating clinical evidence in this evolving field. There are also plans to explore future clinical trials in intraperitoneal immunotherapy and CAR T-cell therapy, as research infrastructure continues to grow.

Overall, this initiative represents a collective effort towards advancing clinical care, training, and research in peritoneal surface malignancies.”
