Sameer Rehman: Favorable Outcomes With Synchronous Biopsy and Cryoablation for Suspicious Pulmonary Nodules

Sameer Rehman, Director of Tumor Ablation Program at Valley Health System, Cardiothoracic and Interventional Radiologist at Desert Radiology, shared on LinkedIn:

“I am happy to share our new publication in the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) on ‘Synchronous Percutaneous Biopsy and Cryoablation for Suspicious Solitary Pulmonary Nodules’.

In a cohort of 102 inoperable patients who underwent combined core needle biopsy and cryoablation for enlarging/FDG avid solitary pulmonary nodule (1-2cm) in the setting of moderate/severe emphysema:

  • cryoablation technical success was 100% (102 patients)
  • the diagnostic biopsy yield was 87.3% (89 patients)
  • malignancy was established in 96.6% (86 patients)
  • within sub-set of biopsy proven NSCLC, the 3 year local tumor control was 91.2% and 3 year overall survival 90.8%

The synchronous biopsy and ablation for high risk solitary pulmonary nodules is a safe and effective, single session diagnostic and therapeutic approach with favorable pathologic yield as well as good local tumor control at an early stage.

Shout out to my first co-author Shreyas Naidu (medical student at University of Florida) for his hard work and dedication on this project for a long period of time.”
