Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO, Board Director at SCAN Health Plan, shared on LinkedIn:
“I recently had the opportunity to speak with Nikkei Asia about leadership, identity, and what it has meant to build a career as an Asian American executive in healthcare.
One idea has stayed with me:
‘Being true to all of those identities while also being true to the work.’
Leadership inevitably brings labels, assumptions, and expectations.
Some people see you through the lens of your background before they see your work.
Others project motives that simply aren’t there.
I’ve come to believe that the answer isn’t to diminish any part of who we are. It’s to hold ourselves to a simple standard: hire the best people, sponsor talent wherever you find it, and create organizations where excellence matters more than familiarity.
One of my professors from Harvard Business School, Bill George, often said:
‘Cream always rises to the top.’
Our job as leaders is to build environments where that’s actually true for everyone.
I’m grateful to Pak Yiu for the thoughtful conversation. I hope it contributes, in some small way, to a broader discussion about leadership, meritocracy, and the responsibility all of us have to open doors for others.”
