Rob Winn, Director at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“No one questions the importance of scientific programs in advancing cancer research. There should be no less certainty about the importance of Community Outreach and Engagement.
COE is the primary way NCI-designated cancer centers translate scientific discovery into measurable impact in their communities. Over the past 15 years, evidence has consistently shown that approaches such as defining priority cancers using catchment area data and establishing community advisory boards improve outcomes. COE does more than build trust, it actively strengthens science by ensuring it is relevant, responsive, and positioned for real-world impact.
COE must remain a core, score-driving component, with equal weight to scientific programs. Without it, even the strongest science falls short of its potential. At its best, COE is the bridge between discovery and impact, without it, that connection is incomplete.”
