Richard Averitte: Recognizing Arif Kamal’s Leadership and Impact

Richard Averitte, Executive Director of the American Cancer Society (ACS) for Central and Eastern North Carolina, shared on LinkedIn:

I’m going to miss this guy.

Sure, he’ll still live in the Triangle, and I can still text him about his Kansas City Chiefs , but I’ll miss his charisma, leadership and presence at American Cancer Society.

I’ll never forget the first day I met Arif Kamal at a golf tournament. He told me,

‘I hope this will be your last job’

meaning he hoped we’d end cancer together.

From his encouraging feedback on my Friday Five emails (‘I love the Friday Five! Keep them coming!’) to the way he communicated with empathy and compassion with everyone from volunteers and survivors to high-level executives, Dr. Kamal made an incredible impact on our organization, and on me personally.

One of the most underappreciated qualities of leadership is the ability to inspire others. Dr. Kamal did that.

He inspired me in this mission, and I still plan on making good on what he told me that first time I met him. I hope this is my last job, too, because together we’re going to end cancer as we know it, for everyone.

I’m grateful to call him a friend and look forward to staying in touch as he begins his next chapter.”
