“I am incredibly grateful to have attended the ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology Course for Medical Students 2026, held from 24-28th July in Valencia, Spain!
Over the duration of the course, we attended seminars on breast, prostate, lung, ovarian, and colorectal cancers, each covering the key clinical trials that have shaped cancer care guidelines on a global scale.
Facilitated workshops based on real clinical cases enabled us to practice decision-making as future medical oncologists.
Beyond the academic aspects of the course, it was a pleasure to meet medical students from around the world, learn about how medicine is taught and practised in different countries and healthcare systems, and bond over a shared passion for cancer research.
One of my key takeaways from the course was expressed by Dr Rodrigo Sanchez-Bayona during the closing ceremony :
Being a clinician scientist involves constantly questioning the standard of care and how it impacts 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 patients. If they do not respond to a treatment, why not? What can be improved?
It serves as a reminder that developments in healthcare begin with observant clinicians, and it’s this curiosity that draws me towards oncology research.
