Peter Slavin։ How AI Can Help Patients Prepare for a Doctor Visit

Peter Slavin, President and CEO of Cedars-Sinai, shared on LinkedIn:

“Patients increasingly use AI to prepare before an appointment, and the early experience of our physicians has been encouraging.

Alen Voskanian, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chief operating officer of Cedars-Sinai Ambulatory Clinics and a primary care physician at Cedars-Sinai, has been pleasantly surprised by what he sees.

When patients give these tools enough context and ask follow-up questions, they arrive with a clearer account of their symptoms, sharper questions and a better sense of what they want to discuss.

Dr. Voskanian compares it to having an auxiliary brain, like the role a family member or caregiver often plays in the exam room.

He is equally clear about the limits.

These tools can sound confident when they are wrong and can miss important context. The more serious the symptom, the less anyone should rely on AI as a first step, and symptoms such as chest pain, signs of stroke or severe shortness of breath require urgent medical attention.

He also encourages patients to mention when they have used AI to prepare, which gives the physician a chance to confirm what is useful and correct what is inaccurate.

My thanks to Dr. Voskanian for practical guidance that helps patients become more informed partners in their own care.
