The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence (OOTII CCCoE) will host a fundraising gala in the United States on September 4, 2026, to support the development of a new comprehensive cancer center in Ghana.
The event, “An Evening for Cure,” will be held at Martin’s Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland, and will be attended by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and Patron of the OOTII CCCoE. The gala is intended to mobilize support from the Ghanaian diaspora, philanthropists, healthcare advocates, organizations, and international partners for the center’s development.
Developing a comprehensive cancer center in Ghana
The OOTII CCCoE is being developed as a stand-alone cancer center in Kwaso, near Kumasi, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.
The planned facility is designed to provide a comprehensive range of cancer services, including prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment, research and innovation, education and training, supportive and palliative care, rehabilitation, and survivorship.
The project has an estimated total investment of $100 million and will be developed in phases. Phase One, estimated at $10 million, is planned to include clinical services with a radiotherapy suite, a research wing, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub, an education center, and community outreach programs.
The center is intended to expand access to cancer care while strengthening research capacity, supporting earlier detection, and contributing to the training and development of oncology professionals in Ghana and the wider region.
Addressing cancer care needs
The initiative comes against a significant cancer burden in Ghana. According to International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, Ghana recorded approximately 27,385 new cancer cases and 17,944 cancer deaths in 2022.
Limited access to specialized cancer services, delayed diagnosis, and the financial and logistical challenges associated with treatment remain important barriers to cancer care.
By bringing diagnostic, treatment, research, education, and supportive services together within a dedicated facility, the OOTII CCCoE aims to strengthen the country’s cancer-care infrastructure and reduce barriers to accessing specialized services.
The center’s broader vision also includes advancing cancer care across West Africa, with the facility expected to serve as a hub for research, training, technology integration, and multidisciplinary cancer care.
Leadership and support
The fundraising gala will bring together several leaders involved in the development of the initiative, including Nana Prof. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei Woahene II, Otumfuo Hiahene and Board Chairman of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation; Dr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, Founding Director of the OOTII CCCoE, President and Founder of Breast Care International and CEO of Peace and Love Hospitals; and Bishop Dr. Evans Glover, Chairman of the OOTII CCCoE Board of Directors and BCI America Board.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who has served as Asantehene since 1999, is supporting the initiative as Patron of the OOTII CCCoE. His involvement reflects the broader leadership and philanthropic efforts supporting health and socioeconomic development initiatives in Ghana.
Fundraising for the next phase
The September gala forms part of efforts to mobilize the resources required to advance construction and bring the center closer to operation.
The organizers are calling on individuals, organizations, members of the Ghanaian diaspora, and international partners to contribute through donations and partnerships.
