“Could lung cancer develop differently in younger adults?
For those of us diagnosed with lung cancer at a younger age, this is more than an academic question.
It can be difficult to understand why lung cancer happened so early in life — and whether there is something biologically different about the cancer itself.
A new international analysis of 14,246 NSCLC samples provides an important piece of the puzzle.
Research led by Drs Chinmay Jani, GILBERTO de lima LOPES Junior, Narjust Florez and colleagues found that younger adults were more likely to have guideline-recommended actionable alterations, including ALK, ROS1 and EGFR, while older adults showed a different molecular pattern, including more KRAS-related alterations and higher tumour mutational burden.
What makes this particularly interesting is that the findings point towards a gradual shift in tumour biology with age, rather than a simple divide between ‘young’ and ‘old’ lung cancer.
For our patient community – at Oncogene Cancer Research, Young Lung Cancer Initiative and beyond – this raises important questions about how we approach biomarker testing, precision medicine and ultimately treatment decisions for younger adults with lung cancer.
The research will be presented at International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer World Congress on Lung Cancer in Seoul on 14 September, we look forward to hearing more.
