Nisreen Qatamish: Small Policies Can Make a Big Difference for Working Mothers

Nisreen Qatamish, Director General – CEO at King Hussein Cancer Foundation and Center, shared on LinkedIn:

More than 1.5 million students start their academic year today.

Behind this figure, thousands of working mothers start their mornings with a commute and a race against time. Preparing the children, delivering them, checking on them, and then trying to get to work on time

Imagine the amount of psychological and physical stress just during these few hours…

At KHCF, we have been implementing a special departure policy for mothers on the first day of school for years, allowing them to accompany their children and live this moment with them, without the pressure of choosing between their role as mothers and their commitment to work:

  • No extra budget
  • Or a complicated program
  • Only a flexible policy that understands people’s lives

For me, this is one of the simplest examples of organizational wellness and work-life balance.

We talk a lot about women’s empowerment, talent retention, employee well-being, and attractive work environments. But these concepts are not only realized by logos or big programs. Achieving balance starts with such small details, and in policies that take into account that the employee does not leave his or her life and responsibilities at the door of the organization.

Flexibility does not mean less productivity or commitment.

On the contrary, the enhancement of belonging and productivity is achieved when the organization considers its employees in the moments that matter to them.”
