Anthony Letai: NCI Officially Awarded and Fully Delivered All Grant Funding for Fiscal Year 2026

National Cancer Institute (NCI) shared on LinkedIn:

“‘I am thrilled to announce a milestone moment for our cancer research community: NCI has officially awarded and fully delivered all grant funding for Fiscal Year 2026.

This achievement represents a critical step forward, ensuring that life-saving research continues across institutions nationwide.

I can understand why many might have been alarmed at reporting over the past year that suggested that the NCI and the NIH would not be able to spend its extramural budget for Fiscal Year 2026.

It was never quite clear to me what the source of information was for these unsettling statements – it was not from the NCI.

While we started out slow, NIH and NCI funded more grants in FY2026, a record high, than in FY2025 and FY2024.

The NCI also funded more Early Stage Investigators in what was a record year for the NIH as a whole.

This accomplishment means sustained, uninterrupted support for our researchers.

I want to personally thank our scientific review panels, program directors and staff, grants management specialists, and administrative teams for keeping the pipeline moving and getting the grants out the door during a year of unique challenge while maintaining scientific rigor.

It was a monumental task, reflecting the dedication and often unseen work that goes into advancing our mission.

That mission remains clear: to reduce the suffering and burden of cancer for all Americans.

Delivering these resources is a core part of our ongoing promise to support the brilliant scientists and institutions across the country who partner with us in this mission.’ – Tony.”
