“We are pleased to announce the appointment of Emilie Marcus, as the Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer of the National Academy of Medicine, effective August 24, 2026.
As NAM’s chief operating executive, Dr. Marcus will work closely with NAM President Monica Bertagnolli, and the Academy’s governing Council to advance strategic priorities, strengthen partnerships, support member engagement and governance, and help ensure NAM continues to deliver trusted, evidence-based leadership on the nation’s most pressing health challenges.
Dr. Marcus joins the NAM from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, where she served as Senior Associate Dean for Strategy. Previously, she spent two decades at Cell Press, including as Chief Executive Officer and Editor-in-Chief of Cell.
‘Dr. Marcus brings a distinctive combination of scientific insight, strategic vision, and organizational leadership,’
said Bertagnolli.

Marcus will succeed J. Michael McGinnis, who has served as the NAM’s Leonard D. Schaeffer Executive Officer since 2015.”
