“Best of ASCO Africa 2026, Abuja – two days that captured exactly why this gathering matters.
Day 1 set the tone with a theme that stayed with me: ‘From Global Discovery to Local Delivery: Driving Africa to the Cutting Edge of Cancer Care.’
Sitting among oncologists, researchers and policy leaders from across the continent, all wrestling with the same question – how do we bring the science from the US to the clinics in Lagos, Abuja, Nairobi, Accra – reminded me why these rooms matter so much.
Day 2 brought that question even closer home. Honoured to Chair the panel on haematological malignancies; brilliantly moderated by Prof Mark Asuquo, Vice-Chair Haematology SIG, where Dr. Akinwunmi, Consultant Haematologist, MRCC expertly presented compelling data on new treatments for our patients..
Also privileged to contribute to the panel on training and workforce development for Oncologists in Africa, where we dug into one of the continent’s toughest realities – how do we retain our medical professionals and build ‘brain circulation’, rather than just watching our brains drain year on year. This conversation turned out to be a truly engaging one!
Grateful to Dr Abiola Ibraheem, the convener on behalf of AORTIC and to NICRAT and FMOH for coordinating a conference that was rich in substance and spirit.”
