Mila Ogalla Toledo: Breaking Taboos and Building Community at the Inspire2Live Meeting

Mila Ogalla Toledo, Digestive Cancers Europe at Board Member, Communication Specialist, Patient Advocate, Public Speaker, and Project Manager, shared a post on LinkedIn:

Cancer is a social responsibility. A global challenge

Last week, I had the honour of being part of the Annual Inspire2Live meeting in Amsterdam.

I must admit I was a bit nervous (the good kind, the really exciting kind!). It was my first time attending, and I was incredibly lucky to share a panel with some of the loveliest, most brilliant and inspiring women.

There were no labels. Just human beings, coming together to share their experiences, knowledge, expertise and perspectives. All driven by the same goal, enthusiasm, and inspiration: to challenge the narrative around cancer and create change, acting together as a global community, not as individuals.

In our panel, ‘Seasons of AYA’, we explore the reasons why we are an overlooked group and how COVID made the diagnosis and treatment even more isolating.
We went from EDI in cancer spaces, to the sense of community, advocacy, and the unique challenges and changes this age group faces.
From end-of-life care, to life until the end. From breaking taboos around cancer, to openly talking about our reproductive health, bowel movements, and everything in between.

Three days filled with connection, learning, and commitment. A time of being truly present, energised, and excited. One of the most unique experiences I’ve had. Such a welcoming and loving space from the get-go .

I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to this amazing community. Thank you Jonathan Clark, Peter Kapitein, Ilona Schelle, Piarella Peralta de Wesseling, Monica Kleijn Evason, Atefeh Sadeghi, and the rest of the I2L team for making it happen. And thank you, to every single one of you, for being who you are and for the marvellous work you do every single day.

PS: I feel completely renewed, but how on Earth is it possible to already miss it?! And why does my face still hurt from smiling so much?!

I haven’t felt this way in a long time, so Thank You.”
