Michelle Mitchell: Can AI Help Unlock New Possibilities in Cancer Research?

Michelle Mitchell, Chief Executive at Cancer Research UK, shared on LinkedIn:

“One of the things that gives me most hope about the future of cancer research is the power of collaboration.

Breakthroughs rarely happen in isolation. They come from researchers and patients working together, from different scientific disciplines sharing ideas, and increasingly from new technologies helping us make sense of ever-growing volumes of knowledge.

That’s why I’m excited to see Cancer Grand Challenges launch Project AURORA today, an £8 million investment exploring how AI ‘co-scientists’ could help researchers accelerate discovery.

The aim is not to replace scientific judgement or creativity. It’s to give researchers powerful new tools to gather evidence, test ideas and identify promising directions more quickly.

Cancer remains one of the most complex challenges in science. AI won’t change that complexity, but it could help us navigate it more effectively.

What excites me most is the opportunity to combine the curiosity, expertise and imagination of scientists with technologies that can spot patterns and connections at a scale no individual researcher could achieve alone.

Progress against cancer has always depended on partnership. If we can harness new technologies responsibly and effectively, we have an opportunity to accelerate discoveries that could ultimately benefit people affected by cancer.”
