Michelle Kirschner: Can We Do Better for Cancer Survivors with Radiation Fibrosis Syndrome?

“As cancer survivorship continues to grow, clinicians are increasingly encountering the delayed and often devastating effects of radiation-induced fibrosis.

Unfortunately, a lack of awareness and understanding surrounding the assessment and treatment of Radiation Fibrosis Syndrome (RFS) has contributed to significant and potentially preventable disability among cancer survivors.

Radiation fibrosis can present years after treatment and lead to a wide range of functional impairments, including:

  1. Head Drop Syndrome
  2. Trismus and jaw dysfunction
  3. Dysphagia and swallowing impairment
  4. Neck and shoulder pain with restricted mobility
  5. Cervical dystonia and postural abnormalities
  6. Shoulder dysfunction following breast or head and neck cancer treatment
  7. Lymphedema
  8. Chest wall restriction and respiratory limitations
  9. Trunk and spinal mobility deficits
  10. Gait and balance impairments
  11. Soft tissue contractures
  12. Progressive weakness and deconditioning
  13. Neuropathic pain and sensory changes
  14. Limitations in activities of daily living, work, and community participation

For many survivors, these impairments become accepted as unavoidable consequences of treatment when, in reality, earlier recognition and evidence-based rehabilitation interventions may significantly improve function and quality of life.
