Michelle Kirschner։ Cancer Survivorship as a Longitudinal, Whole-Person Experience

Michelle Kirschner, Managing Director of the International Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation, Clinical Lead and Medical Advisory Board Chairman at OneVillage, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“As we mark the conclusion of Cancer Survivor and Cancer Rehabilitation Awareness Month – a timely reminder of the importance of advancing care models that ensure surviving cancer is accompanied by the opportunity to truly live well.

I’m proud to share my newly published review in Current Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Reports, co-authored with Peter Adintori and Sharon Hensley Alford:
‘Making Cancer Survivorship the Standard of Care through Cancer Survivorship and Rehabilitation Integration.’

This paper examines how cancer survivorship has evolved into a longitudinal, whole-person experience that begins at diagnosis – not after treatment and why our care models must evolve accordingly.

Key takeaways:

Survivorship must extend across the entire cancer continuum, addressing physical, cognitive, psychosocial, and functional needs
Cancer rehabilitation is essential to achieving survivorship goals – not an optional add-on
Current systems remain too reactive and fragmented, often delaying care until impairments worsen
Integrated, proactive models – grounded in function, participation, and quality of life – can improve outcomes at scale
At its core, this work is about reframing success in cancer care: not just survival, but the ability to live well during and beyond cancer.
