Megan Sanders: Key Lung Cancer Advances Discussed at TOGA

Megan Sanders, Chief Executive Officer at Thoracic Oncology Group of Australasia, shared on LinkedIn:

“Lung cancer treatment is changing rapidly. But which advances are ready to change clinical practice, and which still need more evidence?

Tonight, TOGA brought together five Australian specialists to examine the latest research presented at the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) and ASTRO Annual Meeting.

Megan Sanders: Key Lung Cancer Advances Discussed at TOGA

From promising new targeted therapies and antibody-drug conjugates to advances in surgery, diagnostic techniques and radiotherapy, the discussions highlighted both the progress being made and the questions researchers still need to answer.

Some particularly interesting themes:

  • New treatment options emerging for small cell lung cancer.
  • More precise treatments for lung cancers with specific genomic alterations.
  • Rethinking when surgery or radiotherapy is needed, and how much treatment is enough.
  • Improving lung cancer diagnosis and investigating screening approaches beyond current eligibility criteria.

Thank you to our Chair Professor Zarnie Lwin OAM and our expert presenters, Lucy Corke, Nick Pavlakis, Bibhusal Thapa, Chinthaka Samaranayake and Susan Harden, for interpreting the evidence and its implications for Australian clinical practice.

These are the conversations that help identify the next important clinical research questions.

Watch TOGA’s YouTube in a few days to catch up on these presentations.”
