Matthew Robinson: Blood-Based ctDNA Profiling Can Identify Clinically Actionable Genomic Alterations in CUP

Matthew Robinson, Academic/Specialised F2 Doctor at Barts Health NHS Trust, Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London), shared a post on LinkedIn:

“I’m delighted to share the publication of the CUP-COMP trial in Springer Nature’s British Journal of Cancer.

Cancer of unknown primary remains one of the most challenging diagnoses in oncology. In CUP-COMP, we demonstrated that blood-based circulating tumour DNA profiling is a highly feasible approach that can identify clinically actionable genomic alterations and support precision treatment decisions.

Importantly, this work contributes to the evidence base underpinning the inclusion of circulating tumour DNA testing for cancer of unknown primary within the NHS National Genomic Test Directory from July 2026, bringing blood-based genomic profiling into routine clinical care.

It’s rewarding to see research translating into clinical practice and having real-world impact.

A huge thank you to the patients, investigators, research teams and collaborators who made this study possible, and especially to my co-first author, Dr Alicia-Marie Conway and PI Dr Natalie Cook at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.”
